I recently saw a challenge online to find and establish a family Bible verse. It’s basically like a life verse but one that serves as a family theme or mission statement. It’s something you can memorize and cling to as a family – a declaration of what you stand for and live by.  Throughout the years, there have been several verses that we have clung to during different seasons of life. Through one especially difficult time, Psalm 28: 7-9 was an anchor for us.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped… The Lord is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed. Oh, save your people and bless your heritage! Be their shepherd and carry them forever.”

Through the trials and heartache of that time, God carried us and became our strength when we had none. For us right now our verse is Psalm 95:6-7:

“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.”

As our shepherd, he led us through the danger and the storm, and our proper response is to fall at his feet in worship and adoration. That’s what I want the posture of our family to be – on our knees before our Creator.  But it has to start with me. I want my girls to see their daddy on his face before God every single day, seeking his will for our family. I wish I could say that I always faithfully lead my family in this way. Unfortunately, I cannot say that. But that is the desire of my heart. By God’s grace I will keep pursing Him and striving to be the man of God and spiritual leader that my family needs me to be. Do you have a family Bible verse? Maybe it will change from time to time depending on what season of life you are in, but I think it’s a great idea to have one (or several). We need to be families of the Word. It’s the Word of God that is life-giving and life-sustaining. It’s more powerful than we can imagine. So let’s fill our homes with His Word!
